The current disordered situation on the city square prevents a clear integration into the urban structue. By demolishing the existing pavilions, an open, continuous space is created in which the monument can breathe and unfold its monumentality anew. All parking capacities are relocated entirely to an underground garage, with only short-term stops allowed at the edges – keeping the area car-free and safe. A new row of trees along the street clearly defines the boundary, provides structure, and forms a green edge that still maintains transparency. In front of the monument, a generous esplanade opens up, while a sculptural element above it creates additional park space on a raised level among the treetops, offering diverse play and recreation areas for children and adults alike. An urban promenade connects the northern and southern entrances, integrating all parts of the site into a coherent whole. Water surfaces and sculptural elements serve as strong visual backdrops, shielding the space from traffic while opening new sightlines toward the monument, which thus becomes reintegrated into the city’s structure. The reflecting water surface responds to the seasons, mirrors the monument, and noticeably improves the microclimate through evaporation, creating an attractive public space with a high quality of stay.
